Work from Home Distractions

Staying focused on task can be a challenge when you work from home, but it can be done!  It's taking me a New York minute to get a momentum on this, and it's still a work in progress.

Now let's talk about distractions.  In the middle of getting your kids to school, exercising, errands, having breakfast and getting to your work-from-home job before schools out, picking your kids up from school, sitting your kids down for homework, and getting dinner on the table, there is:

A friend that calls you because she's going through hard times and needs to talk.

Your child who calls you asking if you'll take her homework to school.  She has left it on the living room floor, and it is due that day.

Your spouse who decides to come home, taking a longer than usual lunch break; and, of course, you'll want to sit with him and make him feel welcome in his own home.

Your elderly mom who suddenly needs physical therapy and needs you to drive her there for the next three weeks, twice a week.  She's not supposed to drive, so you've got to figure out how she's going to get to her other appointments; and she's worried about getting her gardening done, too.

These are real life experiences, and AAAAHH! is the only word (if you can call it a word) that I can think of.  The fallacy is that a stay-at-home mom does absolutely nothing but cook, clean, get the kids to school, and all the rest of her time she's watching soap operas and munching on junk food.  And if you tell people you work from home, it means very little to them.  They have no concept that you, too, must remain on schedule if you're going to have any measure of success at what you do.

If you've every tried to work from home, you understand that in order to be a success at all you do, you MUST have an order and discipline to your life.  Of course, there are situations that are out of your control, but in order to stay productive, some sort of order is a must. If you want to be a success and work from home, discipline, drive, and desire is an absolute necessity.

Here's a quote, "You can only be good at one thing at a time."  True, but that doesn't mean you can't be good at alot of things.  Prioritize and have a rough itinerary of your day planned out--kids, exercise, errands, and the specific hours you plan to work from home.  As you go down your list, focus on one thing at a time.  Do not allow yourself to get confused. FOCUS!
